After RETRO CLASSICS® had to be suspended last year due to a pandemic, preparations for the 21st edition are now in full swing. At the start of the 2022 season, the world’s largest trade fair for driving culture will once again welcome dealers, collectors and enthusiasts of classic cars from all over the world. After the long break, our entire team is looking forward to continuing the success story of RETRO CLASSICS®”, says Karl Ulrich Herrmann, managing partner of RETRO Messen GmbH and founder of RETRO CLASSICS®. Even in Corona times, the classic car market has definitely remained in motion.

“The numerous positive feedbacks we receive from the scene and from dealers show us very clearly that there is no substitute for the direct exchange of a presence trade fair,” says Herrmann. “Trade fairs enable an encounter at eye level and offer experiences for all the senses.” In the past few months, he said, a veritable backlog of information and investment has developed in many places, which now gives hope for a successful start to the season in Stuttgart.

Automobile passion

A brilliant start all round, made into a complete experience by a coherent trade fair concept: From venerable pre-war classics to roadworthy youngtimers to exclusive NEO CLASSICS®, from historic commercial vehicles to cheeky US cars and motorbikes to spare parts, insurance, services, accessories and accessories, there are countless highlights and superlatives to discover in the exhibition halls. The whole thing is rounded off by a large vehicle sales exchange, an international parts market, elaborate club presentations and an informative and entertaining supporting programme. As a trade fair for driving culture in the best sense of the word, RETRO CLASSICS® is by no means just looking backwards, but is also looking to the future of individual mobility.

Exciting special shows

This thematic field of tension is reflected in the popular special shows, which have always been an integral part of the brand essence of all RETRO CLASSICS® trade fairs. An extensive exhibition on the 101-year anniversary of the Italian brand Moto Guzzi will review a long and continuing success story in motorbike production. The “Bugatti Royale” – officially Type 41 – which is the focus of another exhibition, turned out to be a legendary flop. The luxurious model was intended to compete with Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz or Cadallac, but ultimately failed due to the world economic crisis. Only six examples were built, all of which have been preserved and today rank among the great classics of automobile history.

Digital time travel

“Meanwhile, the special show “Classic Cars – Future Heartbeat” features an e-Lorean, a high-tech vehicle based on the DeLorean DMC-12, in which Hollywood star Michael J. Fox once travelled through time to great effect. Of course, the electric grandson of the legendary gullwing can’t do that. Thanks to artificial intelligence, holographic 3D displays and gesture control, however, it belongs to a generation of vehicles that is indeed still a long way into the future.

Finally, a special SimRacing area demonstrates how broadly the term driving culture is defined today: relaxed drives on classic routes are just as possible in the true-to-life simulation as a completely risk-free speed rush. The technology, which originally came from the gaming sector, is enjoying growing popularity among e-sportsmen and professional racers alike – and would have been laughed at as automotive sci-fi just a few decades ago.
